FA has released its comments on the latest “Co-Chairs’ Text” as of 1 February 2006 on the proposed Human Rights Council (HRC). The comments were passed on to the concerned governments’ representatives via the New York-based NGOs who are monitoring closely the ongoing negotiation process.

This Co-Chairs’ text reflects the current negotiations being held in New York between member states of the United Nations concerning the proposed HRC and are scheduled to conclude by the middle of February 2006.

FA’s response to the 27-point Co-Chairs’ text contains recommendations for amendments and additions, as well as a critical commentary.

The comments reflect common concerns shared by many Asian NGOs from a regional consultation on the HRC, organised by FA in Bangkok on 5 February 2006.

This latest effort is part of FA’s ongoing efforts to bring the voice of Asian human rights community to inter-governmental negotiation processes at the level of the United Nations.

On 22 November 2005, FA and other Asian non-governmental organisations submitted a joint statement to a one-day informal consultation regarding the HRC in Geneva, Switzerland.

This consultation was attended by the President of the UN General Assembly and the two Co-Chairs responsible for the negotiations on the HRC.
