The activists of Neeti Gobeshona Kendra on Monday (30 March 2009) demanded for the end of oppression and killing of the Rohingya people by the Myanmar government and a permanent solution to the "boatpeople" crisis.

They held a human chain in front of the Chittagong Press Club ahead of the Asian Summit and said the Rohingya crisis was not only a problem between Burma and Bangladesh but it was now an international issue. Frequent killings and oppressions of the Rohingya people by the Myanmar government over the last few decades have compelled them to shift to Bangladesh.

Recently, the Rohingyas are trying to move to the countries of the South and Southeast Asia as the military government of Myanmar has increased its degree of repression on them, the speakers added.

The Myanmar government is trying to define the crisis as arising from human trafficking but in reality its aim is to exterminate the minority Rohingya group in Myanmar, speakers said.

Mahbubul Haq, director of the organisation, Najimuddin Shyamol, general secretary of the Chittagong Reporters Union and Rohingya leader, Aiyub Tin Mong were present on the occasion.
