On 31 July 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand, ASEAN will hold a Civil Society –Trade Union Consultation Workshop on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers, a response to ASEAN’s recent Declaration on the same topic. The workshop will discuss issues and paths to developing a model ASEAN framework on the protection of migrant workers’ rights. The participants will discuss core labour standards, gender equality for migrant women workers, trade unions, and economic integration. The group will make recommendations to the governments of Thailand and the surrounding countries, as well as ASEAN.

The Task Force for ASEAN Migrant Workers, or (TF-AMW) is organising the workshop. It is a task force created by the Singapore Working Group on the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism to ensure a transparent and consultative process in the development of ASEAN policies regarding labour migration, composed of civil society organisations, trade unions, and migrant worker associations. It is committed to engagement with civil society groups and trade union bodies to discuss the policies and issues raised in the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers.
