[Media Lines] The Philippines: FORUM-ASIA condemns the brutal killing of Filipino journalist Juan Jumalon
10 November 2023 11:50 am

The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) condemns the murder of Filipino radio journalist Juan Jumalon.  We urge Philippine authorities to thoroughly investigate the case and to ensure accountability and justice.

From home, Jumalon was broadcasting his morning programme on 94.7 Gold FM Calamba’s Facebook page when he was shot to death by unidentified assailants. Jumalon is the fourth journalist killed since Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assumed power in 2022.

As of 2023, the Philippines ranks 8th among the most dangerous places for journalists–especially radio journalists–according to the Committee to Protect Journalists’ Global Impunity Index. Aside from killings, media workers are often subjected to assault, harassment, and red-tagging. Meanwhile, perpetrators largely enjoy impunity.

‘The violent murder of Jumalon confirms just how hostile and unsafe the Philippines has become for journalists and truth-tellers. The culture of impunity among those who attack press freedom must not persist. We call on the Philippine Government to do more to ensure that media workers can do their jobs without compromising their personal safety,’ said Mary Aileen Diez-Bacalso, Executive Director of FORUM-ASIA.
