Under the Convergence Space on Human Rights, Democracy, and Access to Justice at the ASEAN Civil Society Conference/ASEAN Peoples’ Forum (ACSC/APF), FORUM-ASIA is proud to co-organise a workshop on:

‘Rising Populism and ‘Othering’ in ASEAN – Protecting rights and freedoms of ethnic-religious and LGBTIQ+ communities’

Date: Tuesday, 10 September 2019

Time: 15.00 – 17.00

Venue: Thammasat University Convention Center, Bangkok, Thailand

The rise of authoritarian governments and extreme populism are responsible for the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of minorities in Southeast Asia. Specific minority groups that are often targeted include the LGBTIQ+ community, whose fundamental freedoms; in particular freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly and association, are violated in the name of safeguarding national security and political stability.

The workshop aims to address human rights violations against LGBTIQ+ communities and to raise solidarity among allies towards the realisation of fundamental human rights and betterment of minority groups in the face of an increasingly authoritarian region.
