HRC 41 Side Event: Freedoms of expression, assembly and association in Asia

Exercise of the rights to freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly and association continues to be under threat in many Asian countries. These threats include legislative and regulatory restrictions and direct attacks and violence from state actors or non-state actors often acting with tacit support of the state.
Situations in Thailand, the Philippines and Sri Lanka are emblematic of the threats to freedoms of expression, assembly and association across the region. Join us at our panel disucssion, where human rights defenders from these countries and the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of rights to freedom of opinion and expression will make concrete recommendations on how the UN Human Rights Council and the international community should respond to current threats against these rights.
