Indonesia: Second Universal Periodic Review (Side Event by FORUM-ASIA & HRWG)

Since Indonesia’s first Working Group session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in 2008, some positive developments have been recognized by civil society in the country, particularly the landmark ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as well as the signing of the Convention on Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances. However, many other recommendations made by the UPR Working Group have not been implemented in systematic ways with broad involvement of civil society, reflecting very little improvement in Indonesia’s human rights situation over the last four years.
In this parallel event, which is organised in association with the Indonesian NGO Coalition for International Human Rights Advocacy (Human Rights Working Group, HRWG), comprising of 47 member organisations working on a wide range of issues, including women, LGBT, children, religious freedom, economic rights and the environment, human rights defenders and representatives of national institutions from Indonesia who prepared stakeholders’ reports will provide their perspectives on the national processes since the first cycle, as well as their engagement in Indonesia’s present review.
