About:

Pusat KOMAS was established in 1993 with the sole purpose of using creative media to promote human rights in Malaysia. Since then, it has carried out many campaigns and actively participated in different social causes among different communities in Malaysia. KOMAS has always felt proud to be on the forefront along with other civil society movements in the promotion and enhancement of democracy, equality and human rights in Malaysia.

Areas of work:

Pusat KOMAS has been on the forefront of human rights advocacy work especially among the grass-roots level and marginalized groups in Malaysia for the past 22 years. In addition, Pusat KOMAS organizes the Freedom Film Fest (FFF) which is a nationwide annual human rights film festival which features premier screenings, guided community screenings and a film competition in Malaysia. Another programme conducted by Pusat KOMAS is the “AkuBangsa Malaysia”, a non-discrimination programme which is focused on countering racism and promoting non-discrimination among Malaysians. KOMAS has also been conducting voter education and election monitoring for the past 10 years through the citizenship education programme.

Main lines of work:

  • Freedom Film Fest (FFF)

The FFF is Malaysia’s most established annual human rights film festival. The FFF creates a vital platform for film-makers and activists to showcase human rights films and advocate their causes to the Malaysian public. FFF also serves as a platform for human rights issues such as Freedom of Expression and the campaign against censorship. We also support NGOs using films as an advocacy tool.

  • “AkuBangsa Malaysia” Non-Discrimination Programme

KOMAS actively conducts programmes to counter racism and promote non-discrimination among Malaysians through several programmes such as the National Conference on Non-Discrimination and the Annual Malaysia Racial Discrimination Report. KOMAS leads the working group on the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) with several other key NGOs.

  • Grass-roots Advocacy

KOMAS has closely partnered and supported different grassroots group such as the orang asli and indigenous people in Sabah and Sarawak and the urban poor. Since 1995, KOMAS has closely supported the development of grass-roots leadership and organization in fighting for their land rights. Currently, KOMAS remains as the advisor of the Peninsular Malaysia Orang Asli (Indigenous Community) Village Network (JKOASM).
