About:

LILAK (Purple Action for Indigenous Women’s Rights) is an organisation of indigenous women leaders as well as feminists, anthropologists, human rights advocates, environmentalists and lawyers who support the struggle for indigenous women’s human rights. LILAK also does researches on the major issues affecting indigenous women.

LILAK has also organized regional gatherings for more participation from local communities, especially for the development of an Indigenous Women Agenda. LILAK has also conducted learning sessions at the community level on issues that are relevant for them such as the Magna Carta of Women, Indigenous Peoples Rights Act, and other policies affecting their environment, livelihood and their lives; and basic human rights discussions both as indigenous, as women and as human rights defenders.

First organised in 2011, LILAK has been consistently contributing to the development of the cause of indigenous women focusing on cultural empowerment, economic empowerment, social empowerment, and political empowerment through advocacy, leadership development, and movement building. LILAK has partnered with indigenous women leaders in conducting policy dialogues with key government agencies and international platforms on various issues such as
on environment and health.

In 2015, the national gathering focused on the issues of reproductive health of indigenous women, and their traditional birth practices. A national policy dialogue was held after this, to raise the issue of local government ordinances penalizing home births, which affect greatly the traditional practice of indigenous women.

The latest National Indigenous Women’s Gathering was held in July 24-27, 2017 in Quezon City. It carried the theme “Our Stories, Our Struggle for Rights, for Justice”. The NIWG 2017 has brought together more than 100 indigenous women from 31 indigenous communities from all over the Philippines.
