About:

The Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) was founded in 1994 in Jammu and Kashmir by the families of forcibly disappeared persons.

APDP essentially works on the issue of enforced/ involuntary disappearances, unmarked and mass graves, and impunity for perpetrators. There are over 8,000 disappeared persons in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989, over 7,000 unmarked graves (researched and documented by APDP in two of its reports – 'Facts Under Ground' in 2008 and 'Buried Evidence' in 2009) and around 1,500 half-widows.

Our work has been focused on extensive research and documentation of cases of disappearances, unmarked graves, and litigation. We also do advocacy and a sustained campaign to demand to know the fate of the disappeared.

APDP is a persecuted organisation and has been carrying out its programmes in the face of extreme challenges and difficulties. APDP’s staff have been repeatedly attacked by the state agencies and are under constant surveillance.

Since its formation, APDP has been actively campaigning at the local and international level against the phenomenon of disappearances. In this regard various press conferences, seminars and protests have been organised, besides the regular documentation work, reports and the legal advocacy campaign in various courts of Jammu and Kashmir.
